Check your software/firmware
Find the local agent
Nothing on the sonyericsson.com web site. Tried my service provider, Supercall Cellular, who at first didn't understand my needs, checked that I was a customer and told me I can only upgrade my phone in 2006 *lol*. Then I asked for the agents, and they gave me a Joburg 083 (mobile) number to call (apparently the only one they have). Turns out that the number had changed some time ago.
This is just a transciption of my experience to try obtain a firmware upgrade for my sony ericsson T610 in Cape Town. Just in case you think I am not a fan, I assure you that I will never buy another NOKIA because of their manipulation of their software to uniquely require proprietary hardware. I think the T610 and successors will become as common as the old 6110 I used to love.
Google led me to http://www.expansys.es/forumthread.asp?code=T610&thread=361 which contained instructions on how to check what software was running: > * < < * < * (where > is a right push on your joystick and * is the * button on the keyboard) - there you will see a SW menu option.
Vodacare Main Road Green Point I popped in at 3pm, and they saw me within 10 minutes (tel: 021 421-8228, they're in the Victoria Junction Hotel adjoining shops, next to Nokia). The upgrade did not delete any of my GPRS, WAP settings or contacts/schedule. It was completed by 5pm. A pleasure to have the new software. Hopefully the next version will have even another one of the redundant 'clicks' on the menu for SMS. Maybe even an ability to change my 'joystick' shortcuts [from Internet to create new SMS].

Vodacom - additional hint
Did a google on this and didn't find it so I thought this may be useful. In order to block your caller id per call, dial #31#number (where number = the number you wish to call).
